What can your child expect
on Day 1
Your instructor will say hi to you when you walk in the door! Once it's your turn, you'll meet them at the steps, where they'll ask if you've had swim lessons before, and how you're feeling about your swim lesson today. It's okay to be scared!
Lots of kids come to us with a lot of big feelings about the water, and we want you to know that's completely normal and reasonable. Our #1 promise to every single person who learns from us is that we will NEVER dunk you.
You get to be in charge of your breathing the entire time you're with us. We promise to tell you what we're going to do before we do it (and if you're interested, tell you why!). You'll be invited to try different skills, and high-fived when you do something awesome! This is YOUR journey to learn to swim, and you get to be in charge!
What can the parents expect
When you come in the door, the instructors will say hi! Feel free to help your child get changed in the changing areas, and then hang out on the benches (we've placed some sensory toys around for you to explore, so they have something to do while waiting!)
After you drop your kiddo off at the steps with the instructor, you are officially off-duty for the next 30 minutes. Our instructors are well-versed in how to work with kids of all kinds, so even if your child has behavioral struggles, we want you to feel comfortable taking a break. Play on your phone, take a nap, talk to the parents around you - this is time for you to chill! It does not bother us if they throw every single toy in the water.
It does not bother us if they start trying to boss us around. There is zero judgment allowed in our pool. While they are in our waters, they are under our jurisdiction - you get a break from being the disciplinarian, even if it's just for the thirty minutes you're here. At the end of class, the instructors will briefly update you on what they worked on, and how your child did.
During the first lesson, the instructors will focus on connecting with your child and assessing their skills. Please note, that due to the fluid nature of how kids learn to swim, if its not a good match they may need to be moved to a different swim slot. If that is the case, our admin team will reach out within 24 hours of your first lesson to figure out the best placement for your swimmer!

Parent-Child Play Sessions
Welcome in - we're so excited for BOTH of you to join us! The instructors at the Penguin Play Sessions are there to talk you through how your child's body works in the water, and how their brain development affects their skills. Ask all your questions - they've got answers! They'll also play with your kiddo, show you a few ways to hold them, and give you a few ways to interact with your child in the water to set them up for success! This class is meant to help you learn how to play in the water with your child so you can take these skills to the community center, the backyard pool, and beyond.
